Mary-Ellen Mik-Dekker
Mary-Ellen grew up in Holland and immigrated to New Zealand with her parents as a child. Having travelled and lived around the world with her family, she gained a keen interest in travel. When she left school she went to Polytech for 2 years, where she gained a Diploma in Business Studies with a major in Tourism Level 6. She then went on to gain a National Certificate in Travel and Tourism Level 4 and started work in Wellington, as a travel consultant. She soon moved overseas back to Holland and worked in Corporate Travel; initially as a consultant and eventually to manager of a large corporate travel agency. After 10 years in the industry, she started work at the NZST, passing on her knowledge and experience to students. There she gained a National Certificate in Adult Education and Certificate in Literacy and Numeracy Level 5. She progressed into a more senior role and became the tutor trainer for the entire company, responsible for ensuring that all tutors were trained to be outstanding teachers, and to teach the Cert. in Adult Education. Continuing her passion for teaching, she now teaches STAR courses at Capital Training and enjoys working with students who have special learning needs. She is also responsible for our work on the Dyslexia project, which tests and assists learners with dyslexia. In her spare time, she enjoys interior decorating, fashion travelling and spending time with friends and family.
