Determination Drives Personal Growth

Olivia’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and seizing opportunities.
A year after completing secondary school, Olivia was seeking to jump-start her working career. At that time, she says, “I was not in a good situation - just a dead-end and I needed to realise that, and move on.”
Her journey began with a job at the head office of the Electoral Commission, a role she cherished for its dynamic environment and supportive team.
"I was really fortunate to be able to get that job. Working for government was just amazing. The work was varied, from processing products and quality control to data entry, scanning, printing, and filing. I loved the environment and the people," Olivia recalls. Her performance was recognised with promotion, further cementing her passion for governmental roles.
However, even with great references, Olivia felt she needed to upskill to advance further. "I realised that to continue in a government role, I needed additional skills. Capital Training was recommended to me, and I enrolled in their contact centre training course."
At Capital Training, Olivia found the support invaluable, "The course taught me how to tailor my job applications and CVs, and highlighted the importance of a healthy work environment. These were new skills that boosted my confidence," she explains.
And, Olivia says, the tutor’s delivery of the course content was interesting and entertaining. “The tutor definitely kept the conversation alive, which made it so enjoyable. There was never a dull moment.”
Now, Olivia has a Restricted Driver License, and has secured a full-time role as a Customer Service Representative for Studylink at Ministry of Social Development (MSD), starting with their in-house training programme. “We’ve been learning everything about the organisation, the processes. It can be intense, but I love taking on those sorts of challenges. Working in a team that is supportive is really important and I feel that is what MSD is all about, and I really love it.”
“There are many opportunities for growth within the organisation. MSD looks after its staff, and it feels like a real community.”
Reflecting on her path, Olivia is grateful for the support at Capital Training that led her to success. "If I hadn’t attended the contact centre course at Capital Training, I would still be searching for jobs without the skills I gained. Capital Training was the push I needed. I’ve recommended it to my cousins.”
“I feel that Capital Training really does help people and I was grateful to be able to have that support, and I have the skillset now. I really do appreciate Capital Training for that.”
With her sights set on further growth, Olivia’s personal and professional development has been significant. "A few years ago, I was definitely not the person who I am today. I have moved on, and Capital Training has helped me along the way. It helped me open the door to new opportunities. Now, I’m looking forward to rising within MSD and exploring various roles within the government.”
“It’s really just about finding my capabilities, and building those capabilities.”
Her advice to others is simple yet powerful: "Believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else can help you move forward. Dedication to your goals is crucial, and Capital Training is a great stepping stone to get there."
